You can tell a bot from a live player in Fortnite by behaviour, but the label above the model is far more reliable: a Fortnite cheat in 2026 puts bots on a separate filter, and in Bronze and Silver that clears more than half the markers off your screen. The game gives you none of this information, even though it fills lobbies with bots through matchmaking from an account's very first matches.

The difference between a bot and a person in Fortnite is worth more than it looks. A bot will not call its squad, will not walk to a sound and will not hand your position to a third party. A live player does all three. How many bots are actually in a lobby

The number depends on your matchmaking level, and the spread is enormous. In Bronze and Silver bots can be more than half the roster, by Platinum the count drops noticeably, and in Unreal there are almost none. The logic is simple: the system looks for players at your level, and when it cannot find enough, it fills the lobby with bots. On a fresh account this is obvious immediately, since the first matches consist almost entirely of algorithm.

Team modes make the picture even clearer. A squad with one strong player and weak teammates gets a lobby with roughly thirty five bots, a team of low-skilled players can get more than seventy, and an experienced roster drops to around ten. Which means that at the start of a session you genuinely do not know whether you are playing people or code.

Hence the classic beginner trap. Someone buys software, wins three matches in a row in a low division and concludes the settings are perfect. A week later the rating climbs, bots thin out, and the same settings stop working. Software is worth testing where the lobby has people in it, not where half the targets stand still.

Spotting a bot without software

The behavioural signs are well known and they work, provided you can read them mid-fight.

  • Straight-line movement: a bot walks to a point evenly, rarely jumps and almost never changes direction sharply.
  • Delayed shooting: the reaction to a target appearing is noticeably slower than a human's, often with the first burst missing.
  • Simple building: in build mode a bot puts up one wall and does not edit it, instead of making a proper box.
  • Nickname and appearance: bots often carry stock skins and names, though this tell is unreliable and Epic changes it periodically.

The problem is that all of these read only once you are in contact, after spending seconds and ammunition. The information is needed earlier, before you decide whether to push the target or rotate around it.

What the Override season changed

The season that started on 20 August with patch v42.00 added code panels and Override consoles to the map, and players walk to those on purpose. Bots do not. That gave an unexpectedly handy marker: if someone is at a console, it is almost certainly a live player, and you approach it as contact rather than as a farming spot.

We watched exactly those approaches during the opening days of the season. The pattern repeated: bots scatter around the edges of a location while people converge on the panel. Software with a filter works ahead of the curve here, because it shows not only who is nearby but which of them is even capable of hunting you.

What a bot filter gives you

Arcane breaks bots out separately: there is a setting for aiming at bots and a separate option to hide them. Turn hiding on and only live players stay on screen. In low divisions that changes the picture completely, because until then half the rendering went to targets that will never do anything to you.

Then come the labels that help classify whoever is left. Krush and Memez show the platform next to the nickname, Vengeance and Krush display rank and account level, and Memez counts the target's kills. Out of that a portrait forms: a PC player in Unreal with a high kill count calls for one approach, a console player at a low level for something else entirely.

When not to hide bots

Removing them from the screen entirely is not always right. Bots stay a source of loot and XP, and in some situations they work as an indicator: if a bot suddenly dies off to the side, someone is over there. Arcane's bot targeting is a separate toggle too, and in grinding modes it saves time.

The practical compromise looks like this: keep bots on screen but in a different colour or without extra labels, so your eye filters them out on its own. Vengeance has colour settings for exactly that, with its own palette for nicknames, distance, boxes and skeletons.

Why this matters more at high ranks

The higher the division, the fewer the bots and the more a target misjudgement costs. In Unreal there is almost always a person in front of you, and the value of the filter shifts: it is there not to strain out the algorithm but to save you the second you would spend hesitating. On top of that Epic reviews replays by hand at the top divisions, so shooting at everything highlighted is not an option there.

The merged rank after patch v40.00 added one more wrinkle. Progress comes from both Battle Royale and Zero Build, so within a session you pass through lobbies of different density. A profile with a bot filter saved in advance removes the need to fiddle with settings between matches.

On statistics and rating

There is a side to this people rarely ask about, and they should. Bot kills go into your account statistics, and matchmaking draws conclusions about your level from them. Grind a run of matches on bots and you push your matchmaking rating up, landing in harder lobbies where bots are scarcer.

Which gives a practical rule for anyone starting out. Do not judge software by your first matches in a low division: there you are mostly shooting at code. The real picture arrives on the third or fourth evening, once matchmaking has pulled you up to your level and the lobby has gone live.

What to take for reading the lobby

If your job is reading the lobby rather than aiming, the choice narrows to builds with developed labels.

  • Arcane from $7 a day: a separate bot filter with hiding and targeting, a marker for players in vehicles, settings per weapon type.
  • Vengeance from 400 rubles: level, rank, platform and kills in the labels, plus its own colour palette for each element.
  • Krush from $5: rank and platform next to the nickname, rendering up to 2000 metres, a spectator panel.
  • Memez from 590 rubles: platform, kill counter, minimap and a list of who is watching your game.

Bots and looting

There is a side where bots work in your favour. They pick up loot, walk around locations and die, leaving everything they gathered behind. Early in a match a downed bot is often faster than a chest, especially at busy drop spots where chests get stripped in the first seconds.

Loot ESP closes the other half of that job: you see not only who to drop but what is left after them. Rendering items by rarity saves you running between identically shaped backpacks, and the Override season added Sprites on top, which people walk to the panels for, so that loot scatters on the ground as well.

In team modes, where bots can number seventy and up, that combination changes the pace of the opening. You spend the first two minutes kitting out from bots while strong squads fight each other over the points, and reach the first zone shrink with a full set instead of half a magazine.
